We received the following information and
picture about Angus Goss from Hubert O Caloud and wanted to pass it
along to everyone.
I used to correspond with George MacRae a bit
before retiring off active duty.
I did 30 years and retired as a SgtMaj 1 Jan
2004.. I took employment with the American Battle Monuments Commission
after my USMC retirement. I worked in two cemeteries in Europe before
being transferred out here to Manila Philippines.
Manila has 677 Marines buried here from WWII
mostly the South West Pacific Theatre and Peleliu. The killed in action
from the central pacific campaigns not returned to the US were buried in
Hawaii. As you may know the next of kin were given a choice to have the
remains of their relative returned to the US or remain buried overseas
in a military cemetery. About 60 per cent of the families chose to have
them returned to the US and about 40 per cent chose to have them remain
buried overseas.
All USMC burials have the Marines Rank, Full
Name, State where they entered service, date of death and USMC.
I recently completed quite a bit of research to
find out the units of those buried here and found members of all four of
the Raider Battalions buried here. I thought I should let you know.
I have attached a picture of the headstone of
Marine Guner Angus Goss who you more than I know was heavily decorated
and one of the better known raiders. If I can be of assistance please
let me know.
My best regards and Semper Fidelis
Hubert O Caloud
USMC (Ret)
