one have any stories? he had been the first president of the raiders'
association. he died in 1981. in the raiders' newsletter after he
died, he was referred to as "beloved." i sure would
appreciate any information i could get on him during that period, what
contribution he had. thank you!

What happened to Lt. (later Col.) Torgenson (spelling)who landed on
Gavutu, 8-7-42 with Raiders? One hell of a fighting Marine - Saw him
last in Brisbane in late 1942. I was coxswain on USS Crescent City and
made landings at Guadalcanal and Tulagi and lat r was in Boat Pool at
Lunga Point on Guadalcanal until February, 1943. Have wondered all
these years what happened to Torgerson - he had "quite a
way" with dynamite and Japanese "Cave Dwellers" on
Gavutu

Dan, I only found out two weeks ago that my father, PFC Robert
"Bob" Hollowed, was a Marine Raider (2C) in WWII. He died in
1988. The history is simply amazing, and I feel a tremendous sense of
debt and gratitude to those veterans involved. They sacrificed the r
lives in such places as Tulagi, Makin, Midway, Guadalcanal, New
Georgia, and Bougainville (etc.), for what we have today. Are there
any of the "old salts" from Hal Throneson's C Company still
around? My family would love to hear from you, and what you went
through. Gung-ho! Sincerely, Tom Hollowed

It's great to have actual participants write their experiences of
meaningful historic events. This is important in that the facts are
more correct than those that can be collected by a historian 50 years
after everyone has passed. It is also important be ause you can pass
judgement on the trainning the Marine Corps provides.

Last night over dinner, my sister, brother and I began to talk about
my dad. He was a Marine. He didn't talk a lot about it, around us
kids, and when he did, he relied on book and movie plots. It was like
he didn't want to remember. Now he is gone, and e can't ask him
anything. We have requested his records, but the government moves
slowly, and I thought maybe someone would read this note who possibly
knew my dad. What I do know is that he was in the Recon. Co., 2nd
Marine Division. I was told he was in Merrill's Marauders. My sister
recently received a letter from a Marine who said our dad was a
gunnery sergeant in the Raiders. So many stories, too many to sort ou
. Our dad was Wade Clinton McCoy, and served in the CBI theater, but
was also re-upped, so may have served elsewhere. Whether the CBI was
his 1st or last service, I'm not sure. Anyone out there who can help,
please contact me! Thanks!

Good coverage as I made most of the landings mentioned. One
rememberance was the first night on Yontan airfield. A Jap plane
circled and landed a short distance from our group. The pilot got out
of his plane and of course was downed immediately. However, though the
plane had several hundred rounds fired into it's main body and enjine
it continued to to run for several hours. I was with Hdq. Co. 1st Bn.
4th Marines. We landed April 1, 1945 and I was WIA May 21, 1945.

My father, Charles H. Craig, was a member of the original Raiders and
was always proud of that. I had finally talked him into going to a
reunion (and I was going to attend with him) when he came down with
cancer and died in 1982. Some of the fellows use to stop at our house
in Fairfield, Il when I was small and sti around telling war stories
all night - seemed like they never got there before midnight. I have
heard many of the stories first hand from men who were there and it
amazes me that any of you ade it. I have heard about Guadal Canal,
Bloody Ridge, Lunga Ridge and Henderson Field, clearing the caves and
fighting tree to tree through the swamps. He was proud that he was a
Marine and especially a Raider and I am too. He met my mother, Althea
Ma oun Craig, after he had been wounded and sent back to the states.
She was a Marine and they met in San Diego. She is still alive and a
active member of the Womens Marine organization. She travels world
wide with them. I am not sure what their title is Her e-mail address

I just want to thank all of you brave men who fought for freedom. I
was just a baby born on December 7, 1944 and throughout my teen and

that era who did not ask for war, but did not cower away from it when
called to duty. We have a commander-in-chief who protested us during
the Vietnam war and now does not know how to lead. It i ironical that
you great men saved our future for some who would like to throw it
away. Winston Churchill's words always echo in my head "Never

Like your site. Iwas in and out of Guadalcanal, B-l7pilot, Sept `42 to
May `43. Met a number of the raiders, heard their story, followed their
exploits. Have always visioned Col Carlson as my idea of a commander
and leader, to be emulated. I tried hard to instill in my men some of
the qualities of his men. My observation and personal knowledge was
they idealized and loved him, in spite of the awful experiences in the
jungles and mountains of Guadalcanal. It is with great pleasure that I
found this sit . A great outfit that started the war rolling in our
favor. Thanks

I got this letter about the Raiders on Makin from a friend of mine. I
tried to join the Raider's when they were first forming. but they

the powers-that-be wouldn't allow D.I's to be tran fered anywhere.

How'd You Find Out About Us?: Just started looking for info on
my uncle.
Comments:
I love the site. It is hard to find information on the Raiders. I
posted a message on the bulletin board regarding my uncle, Cpl. Lon M.
Putnam, who was on the Makin Island raid. He never talked much about
the war, but he until the day he died 10 years ago he was a man with
no fear of anything. Said he had looked death in the eyes so many time
in the war that nothing phased him anymore. One story he told me was
how after he was wounded on Guadalcanal, he was put on a hospital ship
and taken to New Zealand. At some point while he was there or after he
rotated back home, Walter Berry came to see him and talk about the
Makin Island raid. ou see, my uncle was keen to fight the Japanese as
his brother (A.B. Putnam) had been killed aboard the ARIZONA at Pearl
Harbour. When Berry asked him why he volunteered for the Raiders, that
was the reason given. Supposedly, my uncle says that in the m vie Gung
Ho, there is an actor that plays my uncle and appears early in the
movie to say he wants to join the group because his brother was killed
at Pearl. A neat story. Anyway, thank you for your work on this web
page. So much is being forgotten as time passes and memories fade. I
only hope that perhaps I might find someone who knew my uncle or can
share a photo of him. Naturally, he was reluctant to talk about his wa
experiences because it was too graphic. I do have a few stories to
share, but I lack the names of all the other players. I'm going to
look through his things and see if there is anything that might be of
interest to your web page. Thanks again. Best regards, Jeff Putnam
