Sir: Your site is fantastic! I happened on your site looking for reseach tools. My father was a WWII Marine. He enlisted shortly after his 16th birthday and made it to Guadalcanal with the first reenforcements. He was on Bougainville. The story I heard wa that they went AWOL to join the battle. (My dad died in 1990. Like many people, he refused to discuss the details and I never pushed.) I have a poster sized photo of a Marine patrol on Bougainville. He was on other island campaigns including Tarawa. He w s a member of 3/4 on Okinawa and came home from that battle in a body cast. I learned that fact when I joined 3/4 on Okinawa in 1970. One of the stories I have heard was that he was in the Raiders both on Guadalcanal and Bougainville. I would like to have a more complete picture of my dad's WWII history. Can you you give me some advise and direction on this project. Thanks.

I have been tying to learn more about your group because I believe my natural father John perry Hickey (California) may have been in one of the raider groups. One of my new found sisters said he was a very tough i dividual. Another reason for my investigation is to locate my natural mother, Melinda(Lindy)or(Lynn)Swiegart married names Hickey and Johnson she disapeared in May of 1960 It's a long shot but if you remenber his name or her name, let me know. He passed away about 1980 or 1981 They were both born in 1925. Her sister is still living in Lancaster CA.

It is great to hear that someone has a site dedicated to the Marine Raiders. I am 29 years old and a little bit of a new military/history buff. Although I was not born yet, I am awed by the men who served during past conflicts. I am not sure if you have r ad W.E.B. Griffin's "Call to Arms". It is part of his "The Corp." series and deals with the politics and history behind the creation of the Marine Raider Battalions. It is however, a work of fiction based upon historical facts. I recommend all of W.E.B. G iffin's books to anyone interested in the military. I thank you for putting this page out there for those of us who appreciate the Raider's contributions to the war.

He passed on right after I graduated from boot camp, so I never got a chance to talk to him about his unit or his experiences. Great site. Issue no. 3 of the Seabee Log is about Guadalcanal and the work of the Seabees there. Col. Edson's Raiders defense of Bloody Ridge saved Henderson Field early in the campaign for Guadalcanal. You could say the Raiders kept Henderson in America hands so the Seabees could do their work.

Great to see that the Raiders have been added to the internet. My father-in-law is a Marine Raider-he is Shirl P. Butler. We (my wife and two children) attended the 50th anniversary reunion in Alexandria in 1993. I,too, earned the title of Marine and ser ed from February 1966-November 1969 which included a short tour of duty in Vietnam. Semper Fi.
