Hi Dan & Louie, Think this year is the 100th anniversary of the Navy Corpmen. I will raise a glass to those who served with us in the Raiders. Especially Bennett, Manuel Maya and "Doc" Martin. Doc still remembers how I bled all over him at Guam - he couldn't get clean d ngarees for three days and the flies drove him crazy. Just learned that some navy ships were named for some great Navy corpsmen -- well deserved , too.

Great website! I wish more vets could get their experiences and knowledge online. It would be a tremendous boost to our current military which is suffering under the 'rule' of a peace-time mentality. After 10 years in the Air Force, I resigned in disgust. We need more information about what the military was like during the war years, when the fate of the nation hung in the balance. We then should use it as a model for our current military structure, discipline, and training. I salute all fellow veterans and may God bless us, every one.

Hello, I am an active duty SSgt stationed in Hawaii. I recently found out that my Wife's grandfather was a Marine RAIDER! His name is Aron FREELAND and he lives now in West Virginia. I believe he was a machine gun squad leader. We didnt get a lot of ti e to talk because my leave was drawing to a close, but he did show me some pictures from that time. It seems surreal that I did a color guard ceremony in 1994 for a Raider Reunion at Quantico Va. Little did I know that my future wife's grandad might have been there! YOU ARE THE REAL MARINE CORPS!!!!!

I am currently a SSgt on active duty stationed in HI. A very good friend of my family was one of Carlson's Raiders during WWII. His name is Frank Chance. I used to listen to his stories for hours and he played a big part in my decision to join the Corp . I was saddened a couple of years ago to find out that he had shot someone and was convicted of 2d degree murder. My father, a decorated Vietnam veteran, testified as a character witness on his behalf. He is currently serving a 12 year prison sentence in Raliegh NC. After learning of the circumstances surrounding the shooting, I can't say as I blame him. Several years ago Frank overcame cancer. When I asked him how he did it, he simply said that he was a Marine, that's how. I thank Frank and all aiders for the sacrifices you all made and the extreme courage and esprit de corps demonstrated through your actions. Your legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of Marines from now on.

How'd You Find Out About Us?: Information from brother

Thank you for this site. I have been desperate to locate original sources concerning the Raiders, specifically the 2nd Division commanded by Col. Carlson. My father was a Raider and though he only spoke of it occasionally I believe it was the foundational experience of his life. It is my hope to write a book on my father's experiences and the expriences of other Raiders with an extensive photographic history of the Raiders. I hope, as my resources develop, to retrace my father's journey through WWII, both in writing and photography. I will be returning on a regular basis. Please continue to support this site and if there are any other resources you know of to aid me in my research (internet or otherwise) please let me know. My father died several years ago and I deeply regret never interviewing him about his experiences. In my study, I now have his photographs and a flag given to my mother at his funeral. Unfortunately, they are the only hints I have as to his life as a Marine. I hope, as the years pass, I will succeed in discovering who my father was, and the debt I owe him as a warrior and father. Again

My late father, Carl Herrin, served in the First Marines, 2nd Raider BN, participating in the Makin Atoll Raid and Guadalcanal. I also believe that he was at Pelieleu and Saipan. He was at Guam, and was off shore at Iwo Jima. He said very little to me except for the summer before he died. He did tell me that his former XO, James Roosevelt, paid for his first steak dinner in San Francisco after the war. He joined the Marines in 1940 and had volunteered for China service when WW II be

This is a terrific site. My father was Col. Michael S. Currin, and I always enjoy learning more about the Raiders. Thanks for keeping their history alive.

How'd You Find Out About Us?: searching for history of my grandfather

Comments:
My grandfather, Clarence Kagemann, was in the 6th Marine Division, and metioned being somehow connected to the Marine Raiders (landing in Emirou (sp?), Guam, and Okinawa). He was in charge of laying communications lines. He could never really tell me mu h about the war without tears welling in his eyes so I never pressed the issue much. Now I regret not learning more (especially after seeing Saving Private Ryan which made me wake up to the horror of war). He is in the hospital now, about to have bypass and heart valve surgery, and I am worried he may pass on without me ever really learning what he experienced. I have 3 children and would like to tell them how my grandfather helped pay the price for our freedom. The path that your unit followed bears a strong resemblance to the accounts of my grandfather. Maybe you knew him? (wishful thinking). Well... thanks for all of the effort you have put in your web page. Sincerely, Matthew Kagemann (812) 333-9300

My father, Frank William Marsh, was on the USS Yorktown CV-5 when she was sunk at the Battle of Midway. The crew were then taken back to Pearl and to what my father remembers as a marine raider training camp called "Camp Catlin" I have not been able to find any information on such a camp but the Yorktown crew were there in June of 1942 and my dad remembers watching the marines training and being fasinated by it because he had never seen anything like it. They were taken there to keep them secluded for Nationl Security reasons as we did not want the Japanese to know if they had sunk the Yorktown. After all the Japanese had reported sinking it several times when they hadn't. Anyway, if you know anything about "Camp Catlin" or kno anything about the time the Yorktown crew stayed there please e-mail me. I am trying to write a history of my father's WW11 years for him and our family but I can't find anything on this one area. Thank.... Cathy
