I spent some time on Guam shortly after the end of the war (1946) in what was known then as the Governor's base on top of the mountain overlooking the Agana beach. We made some trips out into the boonies where there were still Japaneze soldiers. One or m re blew up an ammo dump not too far from our barracks on the stroke of midnight. Needless to say it was a surprise and a bit unnerving to have shells shooting over our heads for several hours.

Dan, the last thing I want to do is give you the "big head," but I can't resist telling you this. During the time you have so eloquently written about, I was around 7-8 years old. I was a shy, introverted boy on a dairy farm in Vermont in the '40's, but I followed USMC activities with a passion on the radio, in LIFE magazine and on the silver screen whenever I went to the movies. You Marines were my absolute heroes, idols and role models. I joined the Corps in '52, hoping to go to Korea to follow in the footsteps of you true warriors. Unfortunately, fate entered my Marine Corps career and, two days out of Yokohama, it was announced over the ship's radio that the fighting had ceased in Kor a. I spent the next two years in Japan (you probably came through Camp Fisher once or twice). I feel that I was a fair-to-middling Marine, but never one that lived up to the standards set by you WWII Marines. You guys are still my heroes to this day and I till regret I never had the opportunity to prove myself worthy of being as good as you. Thanks for the excellent story about the Raiders and your participation. Semper Fi!

I really enjoyed yor site. My great uncle was a raider with the second Raiders. He was under the command of Carlson I believe. He has chosen not to disclose anything about his prior service. It seems very painful for him. I am also a former Marine. I serv d with 2nd. Battalion 8th Mar. Reg. and also 2nd Batallion 6th Marines. I am proud to have the heratiage that you and your comrads ( My brothers in arms ) have left for us. Semper Fidelis Corporal Nathan E Chandler 1982-1988

I think I did this before but it won't hurt to tell you once again...you have a great site! I served in the 1st Raider Btn. and later the 4th Marines as Co. Gy/Sgt. Wounded on Guam which was my last campaign. In looking at yur page re KIA,S, WIA,S etc I think your figures on Iwo Jima are wrong. There were some 6,000 KIA and some 18,000 WIA.

My grandfather (Lorrin W Hubin, shell lake, wisconson) was in 2nd marine carlsons raiders, but he has since passed on, and I was trying to find out the history of his experiences and bout the unit, etc. I don't know what company he was in, but I know he w s on guadalcanal and iwo jima, and bougainville at least. He never did talk much bout it, although he did write down a few things before he passed on. Thanks for the great web site.

I was with the 1st Raider Battalion, B co,3rd platoon . I am associated with the youngest men who served with the raiders.About twenty of the youngest in the raiders have formed what is called the "THE LAST MAN COMMITTEE" the purpose is to try to arrange or the cermony to honor all the Raiders by holding a cermony to Bury the last survior. Of course all of us will be gone and we hope to arrange for the Marine corp Association to do the Honors.

I've been looking for info on the marine raiders and any infoormation would be very helpful. My great uncle was a raider marine in WWII. I am trying to educate others about this little known group so they will get the recognition they deserve. Thanks
